DST
iaian7 » blog John Einselen, 13.03.07I have always known about Daylight Saving Time, though growing up in pre-2006 Indiana I was blessedly free of this now ubiquitous curse. It’s a sad remnant from way too long ago, and seems to serve little purpose anymore.
Since causing mass confusion twice a year isn’t enough (evidently people got used to this), DST was moved up by a couple weeks. This seems to have had ramifications not only the the much angered populace, but the internet as well. Estimates have ranged from 10% to 20% of the internet has go down, as sites have died, servers messed up, and traffic slowed to a crawl. Evidently GoDaddy servers have been especially effected by DST, causing sites (including mine) to go down for days.
Unfortunately, speed issues with my hosting predate that by several weeks. Regardless of short term issues with GoDaddy servers, I’ll be working on transitioning to a new hosting service. This may not happen for another few months, but in the meantime let me know of any suggestions, recommendations, and any / all errors you get while this site is still hosted with GoDaddy. Thanks!
Oh, and if you can, assassinate whomever it is still promoting Day Light Savings.
Move to Hawaii. There’s no such thing as DST (artificially altering the time continuum) in Hawaii! Frankly, when I first learned I had to change my clock in the mainland, I thought it was the most ludicrous thing I’d ever heard.
Well I, for one, am thoroughly enjoying having the light last longer into the evening already.
[Long-windedness warning]
Seriously though, if you are so passionate about the issue, could you make a real, thorough study of it and present some facts? There are many to be found at wikipeida.com alone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time). As you will see there, DST has both pros and cons. You will also see there that the original DST period established in the USA was to last from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. Of course, when looking at Wikipedia, references should always be checked, which I have not yet done.
I would also like to point out, in response to the blog post to which you linked, that DST is not an American invention, nor is America the only nation to practice it. America was also not the first nation to use DST, nor was it the second or even third. I don’t understand why Americans are so fast to attack America.
Finally, I’m sure you didn’t mean to call for any assassinations. I think what you really meant was that you really could have used that missing hour of sleep.
